David Letterman regularly reads articles from small town newspapers. They usually discuss topics that in any big town paper wouldn't even be mentioned. In the first of these two cases, the photographer didn't even catch the bird on film, yet the newspaper published the photograph anyway!

Finally, a new computer

After 10 days of struggle, I am finally fully back on-line. Even when working from temporary computers, I was missing software and couldn't answer anybody in Japanese. Not many of my friends have Japanese installed on their machines.

Today I have released a video taken from a hockey game. To understand a culture it is important to understand its sports. For example, if one doesn't follow soccer, one would miss a large part of Italian culture. But the special lingo for sports is one of the most difficult areas of language! For this reason, I've always wanted a good way to study sports broadcasts.

いよいよ、後１０日間新しいコンピュータがあります。友達のコンピュータを使っても、特別のソフトがなくて日本語の入力ができませんでした。

今日は、アイスホッケーの動画をリリースします。外国の文化をわかるために、大切のはスポーツです。たとえば、サッカーが分からなければ、イタリアの文化の大部分が分からないと思います。でも、スポーツの専門用語は一番大変です。ですからスポーツの放送を勉強方法がほしかったです。

Happy Thanksgiving!

I haven't posted about this week's videos because my primary computer crashed and I've spent the last few days keeping the site running and recovering my laptop. This computer doesn't have Japanese input installed, so I'm limited to English for a few days.

Some great videos will be showing up in the next few days, and I'll get my computers running again.

Kevin Spacey performs amazing impersonations of many famous actors. It may be difficult to recognize in countries that dub their movies with local voice actors, but with your eyes closed one can barely recognize that it is not the real actor.

He is being interviewed at The Actor's Studio in New York, which has trained many famous actors, including Robert DeNiro, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, and more.

Rules Of Engagement - Today's Release

Today I am releasing a clip from Rules of Engagement, a recent American TV show.

Recently, many of my friends have had difficulty conceiving children, and it is always a stressful problem. Each side thinks it can't be their problem.

This TV show is about 5 people: 2 couples and a single man. One of the couples is newlywed, the other has been married for some years, and the single guy is, of course, dating various women.

As English study, I think it is interesting to see how they get around speaking directly about sex, which is not acceptable on network TV. They use a double entendre to describe the problems of conception. Can you figure out what swimmers and pool refer to?

最近は私の友達の中で妊娠しにくい人が多いです。いつも緊張的な問題になります。妻と夫は両方自分のせいではないと思います。

この番組は5人の話です。カップルは２つで独身は１人です。カップルの１つは新婚で、もう１つは何年も結婚しています。独身はもしろんいろんな女性とデートしてます。

英語の勉強として、セックスを話すのはアメリカのテレビ番組でだめですので、意味が２通りに取れるあいまいな語句を使います。泳ぎ手とプールのはどんな意味するか分かりますか。

Performance in China

Hello Yapprs!

I think the site is having performance problems in China. We are monitored from Shanghai, and response time appears to be acceptable, but I fear many other parts of the country are not able to enjoy the site.

If you are in China, please tell me what your experience has been like. Do pages load? How about images? Do the videos take too long to load? Starting a video takes about 10 seconds from NY.

Any feedback on this issue will help me solve it. Let me know!
